For most of you summer has arrived, for others it’s just around the corner. Once school is out, many of you will be going on vacation.
What does that mean? Lots and lots of pictures! Before you pack up and head out the door, here are a few tips that may help you later. If you are like most people, you do not have a photographic memory! Many times you can’t remember what landmark is in the picture you took a month ago, much less last year. This is especially true if you are on a vacation that includes lots of stops or if you travel frequently. So why not use your camera to help you have a ‘photographic memory’?
- Take pictures of signs – like entrances to theme parks. You can then use these to simply trigger your memory or actually use them when you create the album as the title page.
- Every time you change locations, take a photo of something that tells where you are now. You don’t always stay in one place an entire day, so since your clothes won’t change, take a picture that shows you are now in a new place.
- Take photos of the description or details of the landmark or statue. Especially if it’s something really meaningful to you, you are not going to remember the details so take a picture of the sign in front of the statue with the detailed explanation.
- Take photos of the outside. If you are going into a museum or on a ride that is memorable but you
won’t be able to take pictures inside take one of the outside to help you remember that you stopped there and then simply write about the experience when you make your album.
I hope this makes your travels even more memorable! Check back for more fun ways to document and remember your vacations.
Love the sign idea. I have so many pictures I don’t know where they came from. I am definitely going to do this on my next trip.
Blog looks great.
I only recently started doing this. It really does help remembering where you have been and this does help with scrapbooking.
Do you recommend any great software programs to do scrapbooking pages on the computer and then printing them out? Is it costly doing it this way (ink, paper)? I just do not have the time to scrapbook and buy the supplies needed.
Alicia – So glad you are doing this already! Whether you end up printing the photo or not, it really triggers our memory to see it.
I use Creative Memories StoryBook Creator Plus software for making my digital books. You have a choice if you would like to make a book or you can print one page at a time.
You can print the page at home or you can upload to our photo center or even use a local place if they print in that size.
Unless you need something right away, I don’t recommend printing on your home printer. Regardless of how good your printer is, the photo from a photo place will last much longer.
Making your books/pages digitally actually saves you money because you don’t need to print the photos in the first place.

Making your books/pages digitally actually saves you money because you don’t need to print the photos in the first place…..please explain…hey, maybe this could be a future blog post for you! About how much will it cost me per page to print at a local place such as walmart, sam’s club, or kmart?
I will subscribe to your newsletter!
Way to go Harriette!!!! You have me as a potential customer…you applied everything you learned on SMMS.
I will plan a future post on this – great idea.
As for pricing, it depends on the size you are making of the page. Most popular are the 12×12. Some local photo shops print photos this large as well as Costco. You have to be a member of Costco and that size costs 2.99. Sam’s and Walmart do not print that size.
Creative Memories Photo Center is top quality, no membership needed. If you order 25 or more pages (don’t need to be same photo), they are $3.99. You can click the photo center link and also get 20 (4×6 or 4D) prints free. An even more economical way to go is to have all your pages printed in a coffee table type of book and these start at $39.95 with 20 pages for an 11×8.5 size.
Another tip, which goes right along with what Harriette is saying – take pictures of the NAMES and ARTISTS of whatever painting/sculpture/piece of art you are photographing. When I finally got around to doing an album of our trip to Europe, I couldn’t remember half of the artists, let alone the name of the painting!
